Pyrrhotite oxidation and its influence on alkaline amine flotation

The pyrrhotite material was handpicked from an 80 cm thick massive lense of sulphides in the open pit of the Akselberg deposit, and subsequently crushed using a jaw crusher with 3 mm discharge opening. To minimise the degree of oxidation of the particle surfaces, the crushed material were stored in a freezer until used in the experiments.

Sensitivity of pentlandite flotation in complex sulfide ores …

Pyrrhotite is less floatable than both chalcopyrite and pentlandite in both lime and soda ash systems. In the lime system, pyrite depression in the Timmins ore is almost the same as the pentlandite depression, but unlike pentlandite it remains to be non-floatable even in the soda ash system. Possible mechanisms have been discussed in …

Pyrrhotite (po/pyrrhotite)

Compared to the di-sulphides pyrite and marcasite, FeS 2, the S content of pyrrhotite is ≈ half, so it tends to occur in deep deposits or linked to metamorphic devolatilization. Another consequence of pyrrhotite's composition and structure is its instability in shallow conditions, particularly under weathering.

How do pyrite and pyrrhotite damage building foundations?

Pyrite and pyrrhotite are minerals known as iron sulfides. When iron sulfides are exposed to water and oxygen, a series of chemical reactions breaks down the iron sulfides and forms new minerals called sulfates. These sulfates take up more space than the original iron sulfides. As they grow, the new sulfate minerals push against the surrounding rock, …

Since pyrrhotite is unlikely the only sulfur mineral present, this value should be considered a maximum estimate of pyrrhotite concentration. This test simply confirms the presence of the mineral pyrrhotite in the sample(s) provided, estimates the maximum concentration and compares it (them) to the results obtained from other similar samples.

The metamorphism of pyrite and pyritic ores: an overview

Pyrrhotite in pyritic ores has often been attributed to the breakdown of pyrite during metamorphism. It is now clear that pyrrhotite can be primary and that the presence of pyrrhotite with the pyrite provides a buffer that constrains sulphur activity during metamorphism.
